MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Luzerne’s tableware factory in Dehua, China, focuses on sustainable practices by improving
production efficiency, reducing waste, and using smart inventory management to produce
only what’s needed, when needed, with minimal environmental impact.

OVERVIEW

Luzerne’s Blanc de Chine follows a carefully optimized firing process that reduces resource consumption and maximizes efficiency without compromising quality. By reusing heat and other materials throughout the process, we make sustainable efforts while enhancing the strength and longevity of each piece. From raw materials to the final product, we adhere to the highest health and food safety standards, ensuring our tableware is both safe and sustainable for everyday use.

FORMING

Forming ceramics with a focus on sustainability, we recycle and repurpose materials from our production processes, including failed bisque and trim waste, to create new clay bodies and slip. This approach minimises waste and reinforces our commitment to eco-friendly practices.

HEAT RECYCLING

Harnessing kiln-generated heat for drying is an energy-efficient process where residual heat from previous firings is reused to dry freshly made bisque. This approach not only reduces energy consumption but also maximizes the efficiency of the kiln by retaining heat within the firing cycle, supporting sustainable production.

FIRING PROCESS

We’re committed to reducing carbon emissions by adopting eco-conscious and energy-efficient natural gas solutions (LPG/LNG) This choice significantly lowers our environmental footprint during production.

GLAZING

Our commitment to sustainability extends to the glazing process. We conserve water by using a wastewater reservoir that stores, purifies, and reuses water throughout production. Additionally, leftover glaze is purified and reused to create new glaze, reducing waste and optimising resources without compromising quality.

Product Design

We design our tableware with longevity in mind, utilizing quality materials and dual firing to minimize replacements and environmental impact.

REDUCE

Sustainable Manufacturing: We cut waste with ISO-certified systems, energy-efficient LPG/LNG, 5G smart tech, and minimal packaging for a lower environmental impact.

REUSE

We reuse almost 100% of wastewater and repurpose production waste within manufacturing or external recycling, reducing water and material waste.

RECYCLE

We collaborate with ceramic makers and the construction industry to recycle and upcycle old tableware, reducing waste and actively supporting a circular economy.

RENEW

We craft long-lasting tableware with quality materials and dual firing. Our annual trade-in program offers 50% off new purchases for old tableware, promoting reuse and sustainability.

RESPECT

Ethical & Sustainable Practices: We prioritize ethical sourcing, fair wages (ISO 45001), community support, and environmental excellence, earning the Green Mark Platinum award.

ENVIRONMENTAL RECOGNITION

The Luzerne building, from the 1970s-80s, earned the Green Mark Platinum award, highlighting our commitment to sustainability.
